Ok, we’re sure there are exceptions, but haven’t you noticed the people who work in vegetarian restaurants seem to exude a universal love not only through the food, but in the way they treat their customers? Coming to Elf feels a little bit like walking into a good friend’s kitchen with wooden tables, hanging plants and a come as you are and leave feeling better atmosphere.

The menu is completely vegetarian with a decidedly Middle-Eastern flair. They have a bar, but no liquor license, so bring your own bottle for a minimal corkage fee ($5), or just let the whole wine thing go and get drunk instead on the delicious food and loving atmosphere.

As with so many Datebook recommendations, Elf is tiny and discreet - There’s no sign, but you can find it between the American Apparel and the closed down movie theatre marquis. It’s one of those secret gems there are never enough of, and though it feels like you are the only one who knows about it, quite a few people actually do. With only ten tables and a few seats at the bar, they don’t take reservations, so bring a healthy dose of relaxation from your massage and be prepared to wait and reap the rewards that come with the virtue of patience.
