Windows with fabulous views, inside and out

The Eames House

For the design afficionado, a visit to the Eames house is much like a visit to the Bodh Gaya for any good Buddhist. That is to say, while it is a lovely way to spend the morning, it is every bit the shrine to the great design duo who lived there.

And though the policies are rather fussy—and you aren’t allowed inside (unless you contribute $500 and then only the ground floor and only once)—wandering around the grounds and peering in the windows of the house is a true inspiration.

The house, itself, is small and predictably Eamesy—picture those red, yellow and blue shelves from DWR turned into a place to live. Peering through the plate glass windows, one can see all carefully left as Charles and Ray placed it, a comfortable jumble of beautiful objects in space. As with all things Eames, so simple and well-considered, you’ll find yourself wondering how you can incorporate a little of the Eames spirit into your own life—perhaps you already have.

And though walking around somebody’s lawn, and looking in their windows might not seem like a long term affair, you’ll be surprised at how long you can spend there, with so much space to ponder.

CostSuggested contribution/donation of $5 per person.

The Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel

Some romance is candlelight and shadows, but not so here, where romance takes a turn in the bright light of day and the fresh ocean view.

White sheets blowing on the line, the white crest of a wave, the silver sliver of the moon...curtains, cushions, silver and shining glassware that sparkles in the sun like the twinkling blue ocean below. Refreshing is the word for the Thomas Shoos designed restaurant.

The view through the floor to ceiling plate glass windows is extraordinary. Sitting by the window, you may as well be in a plane flying over the sea. On a clear day you really can see forever.

Mimosas are a must. Enjoy Chef Greenburg’s continentally inspired cuisine. What a perfect brunch. What a perfect preface for an after-brunch stroll on the beach.

Tip: Do specify in your reservation that you want to see the sea—the view, albeit expansive, is not 360.

Ok. These prices are averages for one person eating a meal including one drink and a tip. If you play football for the Giants and eat three main courses in a sitting, you should probably expect to pay more.

$$ Middle of the Road, $11 - $30
$$$ Gettin' up there, $31 - $60
