The Kingpin meets The Mariachis

Lucky Strike Lanes -- Hollywood

If you’ve ever thought bowling would be fun if it weren’t for the florescent lights, dirty carpet that looks and smells like it was installed in the seventies and hard seats sporting underside gum collections, Lucky Strike is for you.

Now a nationwide chain, the first Lucky Strike Lanes was inspired by the demolition of the Hollywood Star Lanes—actually lane #7 of that iconic hotspot of yore is now the bar. And like its inspiration, Lucky Strike is full on old-school charm, without the run down seedy parts.

In the way of old Hollywood after which it was fashioned, Lucky Strike features dim lights, moodily lit—professional standard lanes, leather couches on the lanes (instead of benches) in which to share a tet-a-tet between frames. The atmosphere is "night on the town," with a soundtrack to go with it, so be prepared to raise your voice above the beat (and the the clatter of falling pins). There's also a full bar, lounge and restaurant with gourmet eats that give a nod while simultaneously putting the iconic bowling alley hotdog to shame. As if it wasn’t already having enough trouble.

Cost$4.95-$7.95 (depending on the day and time) per person, per hour. Shoe rentals always $4.00.

La Velvet Margarita Cantina

Walking into this explosion of Lucha Libre décor will stimulate your senses and make you feel like you've landed in a Mexican inspired Oz .

While staring at the dancing marionettes or mexican black and white films being played above the bar, you’ll want to grab a "marg" (served in a pineapple if you fancy) and fill up on the surprisingly delicioso dishes they offer. The menu is full of recipes that have been handed down through generations of family members. The mole ain’t bad – we're just sayin’.

Large booths, moderate prices and lively music (strolling mariachis will serenade you) makes this a great spot for groups. Wonderful for out-of-towners who are looking for that classic Hollywood meets Tijuana chic. The folks at La Velvet Margarita are serving up $5 premiere margaritas until the recession ends. Hooray for Hollywood!

Tip: The swanky VIP room can be rented and holds up to 20 people.
