LA Conservancy Tours
There's nothing like a Saturday morning stroll to clear your mind of the previous week's detritus. Start your weekend right with a Los Angeles Conservancy, docent led walking tour that will give you something less stressful to think about than that annoying woman from work.
Tours are offered on a variety of historical subjects, check the website for the full list. We took the Historic Core tour, which is offered at 10:00am every Saturday and manages, in three hours, to give an overview of the prominent architectural styles in downtown LA, a few area history lessons, a bit of forensic architecture (complete with before and after pictures) and culminates with the breathtaking interior of the Bradbury Building, which many people will recognize from Blade Runner.
From the sad history of a parking lot, to a building whose facade is hiding something much more extraordinary, it's amazing how many secrets downtown has to reveal. By the time your friends are rolling out of bed and thinking about brunch, you'll have seen your city from a whole new perspective.
Also worth checking out: The Broadway Theaters tour, which also happens Saturday mornings and takes you back to a time when Broadway was the heart of the movie business.

Angelique Cafe
After walking all morning you are definitely going to need to find a nook where you can rest your feet and recap--a little French food won't hurt either.
Triangular, so that the line of the building follows the narrow corner where it stands, with wrought iron railings, ivy and a copper roof, Angelique looks almost like a riverboat that got stuck and decided to become a cafe.
Inside, the charm continues--makeshift, but genuine. The menu features all your French favorites for breakfast and lunch. The Croque Monsieur is lovely if you aren't in danger of a heart attack. The more cholesterol conscious will very much enjoy the Nicoise salad.
Tip: If the day is not too chilly and not too sunny, we think the upstairs balcony is the perfect spot for a twosome to croon and swoon. And if you are not the crooning and swooning types, it's also ideal for sipping a cappuccino, reading the newspaper and watching the world pass below--very much like a riverboat, non?
