Culver City Walking Tour

Sometimes being in the know requires a little legwork – which our canine friends always appreciate. Bring your pooches (or just yourselves), and explore downtown Culver City on a walking tour of the multifarious public art commissions to be found there. Yes, there are many art galleries in Culver City, but the art on this self-guided walking tour is displayed in the public gallery also known as the street.

Download and print the handy map on the website, head over to Culver City and get ready to go on a treasure hunt. Millions of dollars are spent adding art to the civic environment, and they don't put it there just for the pigeons. Why not take an hour and a half and give all that art some thought and let it inspire a little conversation along the way? We won't say all the work is brilliant, but we will say it's fun to walk around with your map and discover each piece, gems and bummers alike. It's also fun trying to figure out what some sculptures do (or are supposed to do) – we particularly enjoyed the zoetropes scattered on random corners and disguised as average street posts. If you really seek out everything on the map, the whole walk will take you about an hour and a half.

So if this is a treasure hunt, there must be some prize at the end, right? If a well-exercised doggie and body aren't enough for you, there's always the self satisfaction you'll get next time you're here and can highlight some points of interest for your less in the know friends.

Tender Greens

A perfect reward for treasure well-hunted: fresh, organic greens and farm-raised meat. Pooches can't come in, but tie them to the fence just on the other side of the patio, get a table on the sidewalk and you can pretty much sit together (and slip samples through the fence).

Whatever your particular eating habits, Tender Greens has some of the freshest, most beautifully prepared food you'll find anywhere. Most of their produce is organic and grown on the owner's farm in Oxnard, and if they can't pluck what they need out of their own soil, they go second best and buy it from a neighbor's farm instead. They are equally kind to animals, using only beef from grain-fed, hormone free cows, free-range chicken and line-caught Pacific Tuna. Artisinal breads are baked fresh daily. No food gets in here without careful selection. Wouldn't it be nice if all our meals could be so considered?

Food this good and fresh doesn't come without a catch. The catch here is it's so good everyone wants it. There is always a line out the door. Order from the big chalkboard on the wall, get a ticket and watch the chefs put together each delicious meal using the ingredients beautifully displayed along the way to the cash register where you'll at last receive your portion of the bounty. Don't skimp on dessert. Like everything else, it is exceptional.
