Make Your Way to the Station

Bergamot Station

In 1875, back when people came to Santa Monica looking for a cool breeze and fresh ocean air, Bergamot Station was a stop on the Red Line trolly that ran from Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Pier. These days, it's home to Southern California's largest art gallery complex and cultural center which attracts visitors from around the world.

It's nice to be inspired together, so why not spend a few hours gazing at the photography, paintings, installations, illustrations, sculptures and graphic design that Bergamot station has to offer. Once you arrive and park in their free lot, you may need to get your bearings on where to start. We suggest making your way over to AI, The Mark Moore Gallery, not only to check out their main gallery and project room, but to pick up a directory list of all the galleries and their current exhibits. Stroll through each collection at your own pace, grab a coffee or dessert at the Cafe, perhaps purchase something you just can't live without. No matter if you are an art lover, collector or admirer, you will find something in the thirty-plus galleries to strike your fancy. The exhibits are constantly rotating, so you will always have a reason to return. As you explore, you'll begin to realize how lucky we are to have this space in our fine city, eliminating the hassle of driving all around town hunting for each gallery on its own.

Tip: If you have the extra time, the Santa Monica Museum of Art is also part of the grounds ($5 suggested donation). You also might want to check out Hiromi Paper International within Bergamot Station. They carry Fine-Art and Decorative papers from around the world including the largest selection of Japanese Fine-Art and Conservation Papers in the US.

Akasha

The man had a vision.

Akasha Richmond, owner and self-taught chef, sought to create an organic, hip and eco-friendly dining experience. Not only is your coffee fair trade, but your seat is made of organic leather, the ceiling is comprised of noise-dampening recycled insulation and your wait-staff are dressed in 100% organic cotton uniforms. The wines are also almost all grown in either an organic or bio-dynamic way.

The main dining room is incredibly balanced: comfy chairs, high ceilings and well spaced tables which allow only the two of you to enjoy your conversation. The L shaped bar is long and inviting. Local and organic ingredients make up the menu which appeals to carnivores and vegetarians alike. Some standout favorites include grilled artichoke, gorgonzola, fig, caramelized onion and prosciutto pizza; grilled open face tempe; sweet potato fries with ginger sea salt and red quinoa and edamame with lemongrass tofu.

Keeping in step with Akasha's vision, we decided to feng shui our own table with the standout salty-chocolate tart and vanilla cupcakes. Yum.
