REDCAT

If you are interested in influential thinkers around the world, emerging artists, vital issues, challenging traditions and being inspired in general then REDCAT is a must for you.

Tucked away in the 2nd Street entrance of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, REDCAT is CalArts Downtown Center for innovative visual and performing arts. Whether it's the Wooster Group from New York or a Copenhagen-based artists exhibit on the independent manufacturing of a natural soda in Brazil, there just might be something for everyone – or at least anyone who beats to their own drum. Shows take place in their 7,000 square-foot black box theater and the exhibits are displayed in the 3,000 square-foot exhibition space. The mediums range from theater, dance and music to film, multimedia and spoken word events. The great thing about REDCAT is that you can make an evening out of one of the shows, the current exhibit or both. Be sure and visit their web-site to explore their calendar of upcoming shows.

Tip: Wrapped in signature Frank Gehry plywood with a few comfy sofas to help you unwind pre/post exhibit/show, the Lounge at REDCAT offers a full-service bar, espresso, beverages and food. Hours for the Lounge are Tues - Fri: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. (or post-show) and Sat - Sun: 12:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (or post show).

Wurstkuche

What happens when a rattlesnake and a rabbit walk into a bar? Well, at Wurstkuche they become sausages.

Not just any old sausages, Wurstkuche is sinfully delicious and destined to become an institution. In case you get there and are feeling a bit lost on how this place works, let us fill you in. When you first arrive you'll stumble upon a glass case of sausages to choose from. Vegetarians don't worry, they've got you covered. And if snakes are not your thing, fear not, there is something here for everyone: alligator, kielbasa, bratwurst, duck and jalapeno. Add the Belgian fries and pick out a few dipping sauces to go with them; the blue cheese, walnut and bacon holds a special place in our hearts. Beer lovers will be excited as Wurstkuche delivers more than the usual suspects (Duchess de Bourgogne on tap) and you have over 25 to choose from.

Take your number and your date down the hall to the spirited dining room. A DJ spins in the front of the warm yet modern looking space, the majority of which is set up communal style. Not only does this make it unique to LA, you may need extra hands to help pass the array of special mustards scattered about. There are a handful of tables just for two along the edges of the room if you are looking for a more intimate experience. If you need to be real close, you can always snuggle up at the bar.

$$ Middle of the Road, $11 - $30
