| Kissing is like drinking tea through a tea-strainer; you’re always thirsty afterwards.

China Rose
Huntington Gardens
Perhaps the best of Southern California's public gardens, the Huntington features a wide range of flora and fauna from around the world growing in fourteen themed gardens. From the traditional English rose garden (complete with functioning tea house) to a Japanese garden and a fantastic desert garden, there is something for everyone's taste. And if the sun begins to tire you, you can always duck into one of the several museums or the famous library where selections of the vast collection of precious books are always on display.
The Chinese garden, Liu Fang Yuan or "the Garden of Flowing Fragrance," is Huntington's newest addition. Built with careful research and attention to traditional Chinese gardens, phase one opened last year and brings with it a whole new area of exploration and cultural intrigue to the already ample Huntington offerings. It is well worth a special visit, for the tranquil strolling path around the lake which is surrounded by pavilions, decorative rocks and bridges, very much mirroring the Chinese landscape paintings they were meant to evoke.
Tip: Give yourself several hours to explore the Huntington, each garden deserves your full attention and rushing through at the end of the afternoon is hardly worth the trip.

Bird Pick Tea and Herb
If you've found inspiration at Liu Fang Yuan, keep the mood going with a visit to Bird Pick Tea and Herb in Old Town Pasadena. They will quench your thirst and give you plenty to talk about.
In the small, bright shop you will find islands of glass canisters filled with teas, walls lined with exotic tea-making accouterments and placards explaining the significance of each item to the Chinese tea tradition.
Sit at the wooden counter and order one of the special teas hot or cold, with selections including lavender, longan and plum. For an extra $2 add snacks to your treat and choose from pumpkin seeds, crunchy peanuts and sweet dried plums to name a few. After you've enjoyed your tea, take a browse around the store's amazing selection of loose leaf teas, herbs, dried fruits and petals. With all the jars promising such interesting flavor possibilities, it's hard to know where to start. Not to worry, one of the very helpful staff members will be happy to guide you and prepare samples of anything you like in the traditional Chinese way.
Tip: For a particularly romantic tea celebration, order the tea blossom of the day and watch it bloom and come to life in your cup.
