The Annenberg Space for Photography
Wanna spend an afternoon seeing the world through a different lens? Welcome to The Annenberg Space for Photography, the first venue in town dedicated solely to photography. Their mission? To celebrate the human condition as seen though the lens of some of the world's most renowned photographers to emerging photographic talent as well.
The intimate environment exhibits both digital and print photography and features state-of-the-art, high-definition digital technology as well as traditional prints. The interior design is influenced by the mechanics of a camera and its lens – the circular digital gallery in the middle is an architectural metaphor for a convex lens.
The Space lends itself to to many different functions. In addition to the print and digital galleries, the rear portion of the building features a photography reading room and a workshop area for special programs.
Each exhibit will last for approximately three months and have its own guest curator. Anne Wilkes Tucker (voted "America's Best Curater" by Time Magazine 01') curated the inaugural exhibit, L8S ANG3LES, which features different genres of contemporary photographic exploration - architecture, portraiture, photojournalism and art - with interrelated themes weaving throughout. It also features a world of celebrated Times staff photographers and a selection of archival photographs of the city going back over 100 years.
Be sure to start your tour with the brief film in the media room which presents each photographer's innovative perspectives on community, people and the world. It will give a deeper meaning to your experience which is exactly what the Annenberg Foundation sets out to do.
Tip: The IRIS Nights Lecture Series takes place Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. It's free (on a first come first serve basis) and brings life to the featured exhibit by bringing the featured photographers to you. Sign up on their website to receive updates on lectures, events and their on-line newsletter.

Craftbar
After your trip to the Annenberg Space, you'll need a place to unwind and discuss Carolyn Cole's visual reports from the international war zones over a glass or two of Syrah. No need to move the car, it's a stones throw.
Tom Colicchio (chef, owner, aka the guy from Top Chef) has brought his well-known East coast sensation Craft to Los Angeles. The bar scene (which has been dubbed Craftbar) is what grabbed Datebook's attention. With a tranquil terrace sporting spacious, comfy cabanas and a handful of stars, you may have found the perfect place to hide and get lost in each other for a few hours.
Thanks to the new bar menu, you can enjoy this swanky bar scene with cocktails, wine, small plates, pasta, cheese and sweets for $10 and under. The menu is subject to change, however, we were delighted to find cured albacore tuna with cara cara orange mint, braised short rib ravioli with hazelnut, valdeon (blue) with kumquats and walnuts and a butterscotch panna cotta with green apple ice.
Grab a kiss under the stars or inside where all the action takes place.
