Norton Simon Museum of Art
Good things can come in small packages. Even though the Norton Simon Museum of Art is boutique in size, don't be fooled, it holds a world-renowned collection of art. With a Picasso on your right and your date on your left, it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon. You can unwind, feel inspired and yet not be overwhelmed by too much ground to cover.
Mr. Norton Simon, himself, was a renowned art collector, businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Norton Simon Museum. The museum houses European 16th – 19th century art, modern and contemporary art, prints and photographs. Current exhibitions include: Jain Art from India and Matisse's Amours: Illustrations of Pierre de Ronsard's Love Poems.
The serene sculpture gardens make the perfect setting to enjoy a snack, wine or tea from the Petina Group's cafe. During the summer the Norton Simon will present an adult drawing class in the garden where you can unlock secrets of landscape drawing with the techniques of the impressionist and post impressionist painters. Tours are given, films about the Norton Simon are screened daily and there is an acoustiguide audio tour for $3.00. Be sure and check out their schedule on-line as their events change frequently and give yourselves at least two hours to enjoy what they have to offer. Diminutive doesn't mean there's nothing to do.
Tip: The first Friday of every month from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. admission is free.

Julienne
This romantic French-Californian breakfast spot is tucked away in the enchanting "burbs" of San Marino. You'll arrive and feel like you got out of town for the weekend even before you sit down. Put your name in and stroll over to the attached gourmet market which offers amazing homemade breads (take that La Brea Bakery), pastries, cookies, prepared meals and boutique wines.
We've been hearing for quite some time now that this is perhaps the best breakfast in So. Cal. We concur. It was Susan Compoy's passion for cooking and detail that makes this place so special. Don't count calories, and be prepared to share everything. May we suggest the lemon creme brulee scone, the parmesan crusted potato cake with poached eggs, guacamole and tomato basil salsa, the blueberry lemon curd pancakes and the baked creme brulee french toast with fresh strawberry sauce and creme anglaise. Look, we told you not to count calories.
The service is friendly and attentive and the outdoor heat lamps will keep you warm should you choose the patio on a chilly day.
