The Silverlake Stairs

One of the best features of Silverlake are the stairs. Winding through the architecturally significant hills are literally hundreds of stairways connecting lower roads with upper roads and providing unexpected tours of the area. The only trick is finding them.

The Big Parade was a several day stair hiking event covering many of the stairs in Silverlake, Los Feliz and Echo Park. Using the Big Parade maps, we recommend coming up with your own mini parade for a weekend morning stroll - with calf burning benefits. Part orienteering expedition, part treasure hunt, and a whole lot of exercise, print out the map at the website listed below and find out what makes Silverlake such a special place.

Tip: Choose one of the colored routes on the map and zoom in to print a readable, and less time consuming, version. We quite like the light blue route on the Day Two map that takes you up above the Silverlake Reservoir - partly for the view, and partly because of its proximity to some very nice brunch spots.

Reservoir

Just a stone's throw from the reservoir for which it's named, Reservoir is the perfect spot for a post-stair-hike brunch. An area favorite, the diminutive restaurant offers a laid back atmosphere and fresh, thoughtful food combinations.

While most nights a reservation is required, we've found that brunch is an easy affair. Try the breakfast pizza. The wine and beer list is well-considered, but the Sunday morning must haves are the special cocktails. Made with muddled fruits, soda and soju served in a pint glass, they're some of the most refreshing sippers to be found in Silverlake. You might find you have to order two - one can never have too much refreshment.

Ok. These prices are averages for one person eating a meal including one drink and a tip. If you play football for the Giants and eat three main courses in a sitting, you should probably expect to pay more.

$$ Middle of the Road, $11 - $30
$$$ Gettin' up there, $31 - $60
