Dietician Ashley Koff gives tips for snacking healthy while watching your favorite sporting events.

We asked dietician Ashley Koff how to perk up the tired snack food lineup with healthier and tastier options.

With March Madness right around the corner, many daters will find themselves in for nights of sports spectatorship--which, whether at home or in a bar, means sideline snacking. And while there's no better bonding experience than cheering together (or throwing your shoes at the offending ref on the television) there's also nothing worse for the collective waistiline--and overall health--than the oft repeated sporting snack array of Doritos, chicken wings and ranch dressing.

Koff has built her business focusing on healthy food that tastes good. "I like to say health food shouldn't taste like health food," she explains. To that end, she focuses on teaching people how to eat healthy with a particular emphasis on making individual choices and personalizing programs to the individual's needs. "Eating well comes down to what your needs are and what works for your lifestyle," says Koff.

Koff's simple tips for healthy snacking can keep sports fans from falling into a sideline slump.

Mix it Up!

Koff points to food combinations to put the healthy in your snacks

She favors serving guacamole with chips over hummus. "You want to get a mix of healthy fats, carbohydrates and proteins," she explains. "With guacamole and chips you get healthy fats and carbs, but with hummus and chips, it's carbs and carbs--which just means sugar crash and weight gain. If you are going to serve hummus, serve it with vegetables."

She also recommends guacamole over spinach dip--which is full of dairy and sugar.

Hydrate and dip it!

"I love avocados because they are a great source of potassium which hydrates you. That's especially good when you are drinking alcohol," says Koff. Yet another reason to go for the guac.

She also cites cucumbers, celery and zucchini as great hydrators. Rather than serving them with fattening dips, Koff recommends putting out an olive tapenade or pesto, both of which have lots of the healthy fats she loves. And, she adds, "if you are putting out the pesto, why not make some delicious turkey, pesto roll-ups?"

When in a Sports Bar...

Lots of sports snacking takes place out side of the home--but being in a sports bar doesn't necessarily mean you have to throw health to the wind. After all, shouldn't watching the body prowess on the court inspire healthy behavior in the stands?

Even with a sports bars notoriously unhealthy menu, you can still apply Koff's know how.

"Try to order meats without sauces on them. Order the chicken skewers, then dip them in mustard or hot sauce. Prepared sauces tend to have a lot of bad fats and sugars," says Koff.

Choose a shrimp cocktail over fried shrimp and ask for hot sauce instead of cocktail sauce--which is also full of sugar.

When ordering nachos, go for chicken, salsa, guacamole, whole beans and tell them to go light on the cheese. Avoid the sour cream, beef, refried beans and mounds of cheese--that's where they pile on the calories.

With simple tips like these, eating healthy won't make you feel like you've fouled out of the fun.
