Writing pair Jonathan Bines and Alexandra Jacobs discuss bringing some literary fun to the dating world.
ALEXANDRA: The only sign of "writerliness" Jon has ever displayed on a date was bringing a copy of Christopher Lasch's The True and Only Heaven to our first one, which was a good thing, as I was half an hour late.
JON: Not true. I also pepper my conversation liberally with references to books I haven't read.
ALEXANDRA: Sometimes I fear he spends more time with his laptop than me, but then I pout about it, and we have a good thumb-wrestle.
JON: Hold on a sec. Just posting a response to a comment on a HuffPo blog. OK. What?
ALEXANDRA: I used to write a column in which Jon was a recurring character called "Precious," much to the amusement of my colleagues--he tolerated it with good humor, though.
JON: I mostly write about things that happen in the news, so except on those few occasions when Alexandra makes the news, such as the time she almost died on that JetBlue flight with the sideways wheel, it doesn't really come up.
ALEXANDRA: Going to a reading, then talking about how disappointing the author is in real life.
JON: Anyplace with paper napkins. Writers are always jotting down ideas on napkins.
ALEXANDRA: Or a date that involves puns. We both have a high tolerance for puns and will turn almost anything into a silly song.
JON: Here comes the pun...
ALEXANDRA: Oh, girls just want to have puns!
JON: Janie got a pun...
ALEXANDRA: Baby, we were born to pun...
JON: What a great date!
ALEXANDRA: I know!
