Artist, Bettina Hubby, suggests a few projects to build intimacy through fashion.
Through the addition of embroidery, notions and surprising stitching, Bettina's specialty is putting the essence of a client into an article of his or her own clothing. While retaining the original shape and features, in Bettina's hands, the piece becomes a bridge between experiences past and present and, at the same time, something entirely new.
From her unique perspective on the life of clothing, Bettina shared some ideas for spicing up a relationship the Hubby way.
"This is such a great thing to do," explains Bettina, "because the labels are always so itchy and uncomfortable. Not only are you getting intimate with their intimates, you're making their intimates more comfortable. It's funny and at the same time it's very thoughtful and sexy."
What to do with all the labels? While most of us would probably just throw them away, Bettina has a much better plan, "Buy a simple journal and glue them on the cover, it's very personal. You could either give it to your partner as a gift or use it to write your own secret romantic thoughts."
"Maybe your boyfriend likes you in a skirt and you never wear them, let him take the lead. Or perhaps your girlfriend thinks men in ties are dreamy and you always wear t-shirts. Allow yourself to be the way your partner sees you. You'll feel different and sexy knowing that what you have on is a turn on. Maybe he or she will give you the same gift in return, and it will be a secret the two of you share for the evening," Bettina says.
"Plant a surprise for the next time your sweetheart pulls on his or her favorite sweater or jacket. Be clever about the way you do it. Sewing a note under a collar, writing a special phrase in Sharpie on an inside seam or slipping a locket with your pictures into the pocket are all sure-fire ways to make the wearer love the garment (and you) all the more." Bettina says.
And how could they not? Considering that our clothes spend more time in intimate contact with our bodies than just about anyone, using them as a way to get closer makes perfect sense.
