Mitch Colapinto
— Surf Instructor

Surf instructor, Mitch Colapinto, convinces us to challenge ourselves and ride the wave.

Mitch is founder/director of his own surf camp in San Clemente, CA. He has shared his passion for surfing and knowledge of the sport with thousands of students during his 11 years as a surf instructor. He has traveled all over the world surfing breaks in Indonesia, Australia, Hawaii and Costa Rica.

If you and your honey have ever fantasized about being an Emma (ultimate hot surfer chick) and the Big Kahuna (best dude on the beach) together, you might not want to risk a bruised ego and consider a surfing lesson. But, maybe the idea of a lesson sends you into a panic because this surfing thing seems a bit too daunting? Isn't it just easier to find your Point Break DVD? Relax, Datebook spoke to Mitch about offering our readers some fist time tips. Mitch advises "First, just remember to go out and have fun. Abandon any notions of being or looking cool. Not going to happen your first time out. Embrace it and you'll get off to a better first start."

Just exactly what type of surfing gear will we need for our lesson?

Mitch explains "You will need a rash guard, wetsuit, and soft-top surfboard. The type of wetsuit will depend on the water temperature and on your ability to withstand chilly water. Your height and weight will determine the size of the board you will need. Most surf shops will have the necessary equipment available to rent and most private instructors should have their own quiver of boards for you to choose from as well as the wetsuits and possibly, the rash-guard. Note that the rash guards prevent rashes, so you wear them under the wetsuit. You should also bring a towel and a change of warm clothes."

How long is a typical lesson and what should our couples expect out of it?

"The lesson will last from an hour to and hour and a half if conditions are good and the swell is small, which is best when learning. Then after some one-on-one coaching with an instructor, you and your date can go out together and take turns getting pushed into some bomb set waves," says Mitch.

San Clemente? Malibu? Talk to us about location.

Mitch explains, "There are several locations in Southern California that are ideal for learning. In San Clemente, Old Mans at San Onofre has a nice, slow crumbly wave that is perfect for the beginner. Also, just north of the pier in San Clemente is a clock tower and the wave that breaks in front is very forgiving, slow and gentle. Fisherman's is located at the base of the pier and has a nice happy hour. It's a great way to end your day and take it into the evening by watching the barns below shooting the pier – that's surf talk for watching surfers catch the waves below.

In Malibu, Zuma beach is a great place to learn. Plenty of parking, sandy bottom, clean water and a gentle break. Private lessons are also available there at Malibu Mako's."

If you'd like to contact Mitch for a private lesson for two, please drop him a note at www.colassurfcamp.com for further details.
