Holistic Health Counselor, Jen Warner, shares some beauty tips that start from the inside.

Mirrors never lie.

So, you've got a hot date this weekend and you just looked in the mirror and aren't particularly excited about what you see. Your skin looks like crap, you've got circles under your eyes, and you're so bloated that it looks like you ate a soccer ball for lunch. What the heck is going on? More importantly, what do you do about it NOW? Holistic health counselor, Jen Warner, offered Datebook some spur of the moment nutritional RX.

Eliminate wheat and dairy from your diet for a week. And look to soothing spices.

Wheat and dairy are two of the most common causes of digestive complaints and skin problems. If after a week, you notice that you're feeling less bloated and gassy, or that your breakouts are clearing up, you may have a wheat or dairy allergy or sensitivity and you should follow up with your doctor. In the meantime, you can rest assured that there's much less chance of farting in bed.

As for the herbs, dried in capsule form or fresh, ginger is great for soothing digestion and reducing bloating. A delicious after dinner tea can be made with sliced fresh ginger in a cup of boiling water. Serve with a square or two of extra dark chocolate (70% cocoa content or higher for maximum health benefits) and you'll also satisfy your sweet tooth. Fennel is also great for settling your stomach after a meal, reducing bloating, and keeping your breath sweet (bonus!). Try fennel in capsule form, as a tea, or even chewing on the seeds (you've seen them at Indian restaurants).

Sweeten your personality, not your food.

Sugar wreaks havoc on the skin and can also lead to yeast infections (a true date killer). Try replacing your morning croissant or bagel and coffee with cream and sugar with this delicious (and very Euro) wheat / dairy free, and low sugar breakfast:

Cereal of Beauty
1/2 cup of organic oats
2 dried black mission figs
1/4 cup walnuts
1/2 cup warm water
2 tsps Grade B maple syrup

Combine all of the ingredients (except maple syrup) in a small container and let soak overnight. In the morning serve with maple syrup. Enjoy with a small cup of espresso (black) or a cup of green or herbal tea. You're gorgeous!

What if I think I do have a food allergy?

Our skin may not be the window to our soul, but it is definitely one to our health and well-being. Everyone knows that what you eat (or don't eat) can affect your skin, but did you know that skin reactions can indicate food allergies or sensitivities? The most common food allergens are wheat, milk/dairy, eggs, soy, fish, shellfish, tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews), and peanuts (which are NOT a nut). An extreme food allergy can cause hives, swelling, and sometimes even death. But less extreme allergies or sensitivities can lead to acne, eczema, dandruff, dry skin patches, redness, puffiness/water retention, or dark circles under the eyes. No fun on a first date (or any time).

Keep in mind that every body is different and other foods may cause these types of reactions. For example, many people are allergic or sensitive to berries, corn, or chocolate. Some people can't tolerate tomatoes, potatoes, or peppers.

If you suspect that you have a food allergy or sensitivity that is affecting your skin (or any other part of your body), it is always best to see your doctor who may refer you to an allergist for more testing. Never eliminate foods from your diet without speaking with a qualified health practitioner first. A certified health counselor can help you adapt to new dietary restrictions, and guide you through the process of making diet and lifestyle changes.
